Skimming & Reskimming Services

Skimming is the process of applying a thin finishing coat of plaster – typically 2–3mm thick – to walls and ceilings to create a smooth, flat surface that is ready for painting or wallpapering. It is the most common type of internal plastering work we carry out.

Whether you need freshly fitted plasterboard skimmed, an old textured ceiling smoothed over, or tired walls in a period property reskimmed to bring them back to life, our experienced plasterers deliver a flawless finish every time.

When Do You Need Skimming?

Skimming is needed when you have new plasterboard fitted that needs a finishing coat, existing walls or ceilings that are uneven, cracked, or in poor condition, Artex or textured ceilings you want to smooth over, rooms in a new extension or loft conversion that need finishing, or walls after wallpaper removal that have been left rough or damaged.

Our Skimming Process

We follow a thorough process on every skimming job to ensure the best possible finish.

First, we assess the condition of the surface and carry out any necessary preparation – this may include removing loose plaster, filling deep cracks, or applying PVA or a bonding agent.

We then apply the skim coat in two passes, building up a smooth, even surface. Finally, we trowel the plaster to a polished finish, leaving it ready for decoration once dry.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you skim over Artex?
Yes. In most cases we can skim directly over Artex to create a smooth, modern finish. The Artex surface needs to be well-bonded and stable. If it is loose or flaking, we may need to remove it or apply plasterboard over the top first.
A standard room (walls and ceiling) typically takes one day to complete. Larger rooms or rooms requiring significant preparation may take longer. We will give you a clear timeframe when we quote.
Depending on conditions, new plaster is typically ready to paint within a week.
