Two-Coat Plastering – Float & Set

Float and set, also known as solid two-coat plastering or traditional plastering, is a method of plastering used on bare brick, block, or stone walls. It involves applying a thick backing coat (the float) to level the wall, followed by a thin finishing coat (the set or skim) to create a smooth, paint-ready surface.

This method is commonly used in new-build properties, extensions, garage conversions, and renovation projects where the internal walls are bare masonry rather than plasterboard. It produces a hard, durable plaster finish that is well-suited to high-traffic areas.

When Is Float & Set Used?

Float and set is typically used on new brick or block walls in extensions and new builds, exposed masonry walls in renovation or conversion projects, garage and outbuilding conversions, and older properties where original plaster has been removed back to bare brick or stone.

Our Process

We apply a scratch or float coat of sand and cement or bonding plaster to the wall, building it up to a uniform thickness and level. Once this has set sufficiently, we apply a finishing skim coat on top to create a smooth surface ready for decoration.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is float and set more expensive than plasterboarding?
Float and set is typically more expensive than plasterboarding because it is more labour-intensive and uses more material. However, it is the correct method for bare masonry walls and produces a very durable finish. We will advise you on the most appropriate and cost-effective method for your project.
A standard room typically takes 2–3 days to complete, as the backing coat needs to set before the finishing coat can be applied. We will give you a clear timeframe when we quote.
